Oh look, a new Mixcast! I’m sorry there’s been a lack of these lately but I’ve been trying to juggle a number of other projects. I’ll try to be more consistent from here on out because I know you all like these quite a bit. As always, I’m always up for suggestions for themes if anything comes to mind.

For this week’s Mixcast it’s an ode to fall as in lots of places in the northern hemisphere the weather is beginning to change, even here in seasonless Los Angeles. It’s a pretty mellow mix good for drinking your coffee in the morning or perhaps working late at night. Sorry to those of you who want to dance the night away, maybe next week?

Here’s this week’s tracklist:
Weather Systems by Andrew Bird
Ella by M. Ward
Which Will by Nick Drake
Why Must It Always Be This Way by Choir of Young Believers
Alice’s Wonderland by Bert Jansch
This Place Is Haunted by DeVotchKa
Reprise by Grizzly Bear
The Void by Papercuts
The Owl and the Tanager by Sufjan Stevens
While I Shovel The Snow by The Walkmen
Dusk: A Peach in the Orchard by Eels
No Time For Breaking Up by Jens Lekman

I meant to post this yesterday but I honestly put this together last night/this morning. Thankfully though the whole thing came together quite nicely as this slightly noisy, slightly chillwave-ish kind of summer vibe mix. I went to the beach with Kyle on Sunday afternoon, kinda’ late around 2 or so, and this would have been a perfect mix for that time. The windows were down, the sign was high, the weather was warm but not too hot and the smell of the ocean grew stronger as wel got closer.

A lot of these are instrumental tracks with some vocals mixed in here and there. I also really like how the rhythm of this mix turned out, the way it goes from fast to slower and back up again.

I should also mentioned that the photos for this week’s Mixcast were provided by Moe Rayat, a Southern California based photographer who does a lot of beautiful wedding photos but also dabbles in landscapes as you can see. Moe happened to write me this afternoon about his photos and I thought they fit the vibe of the mix perfectly, so there you. Thanks Moe!

Here’s this week’s tracklist:
Glitter by No Age
Blind by Blackbird Blackbird
Snow & Taxis by Gold Panda
One Flowery Sabbath by Black Moth Super Rainbow
June Evenings by Air France
Deck Observatory by Ducktails
Slow Swords by Deerhunter
Lawn Knives (Teen Daze Remix) by Gobble Gobble
Into The Sun by Lord Huron
She Just Likes To Fight by Four Tet
Departure by Baths
See The Brightest Star by The Clams

I know, I know, it’s been a couple weeks since the last Mixcast, but that’s ok, this one is extra special. I honestly had a mix last week but it was kind’a weak and lame. So I scrapped the whole thing and started from scratch, which thankfully birthed this gem of a mix. It’s kind of weird, kind of noisy, kind of electronic. It flows together really well, I think, blending from one dark thought to the next. There are old things and brand new stuff, but all of it’s wonderful.

As always, and I feel like I should write this more consistently, if you like something you hear be sure to support them in some way. Buy their album, buy their record, buy their t-shirt, see them play live, tell your friends. I feel like this is sort of a dumb thing to say, but that’s the whole point of these mixes, for people to find great new music.

Here’s this week’s tracklist:
Darkest Hour by Megafaun
..And The World Laughs With You by Flying Lotus Feat. Thom Yorke
Bachelorette by Björk
Melody Of Certain Three by Blonde Redhead
PJ In The Streets... by Xiu Xiu
Slowdance by Matthew Dear
The Numbers Song by DJ Shadow
Magic Doors by Portishead
Proud Evolution by Liars
Never Mind by Ganglians
On the Run by The Flaming Lips

It’s been quite a while since the last Mixcast, I guess I’ve been trying to refuel myself. It’s nuts to think that I’ve made 40 of these so far, just 12 away from an entire year of Mixcasts. I actually think the little break was good for me. I have a bunch of rad new songs to share and this is honestly one of my favorites in recent memory. There’s brand new stuff from Arcade Fire, Blonde Redhead and The Books as well as some smaller artists like Brothertiger, Twin Sister and Gold Panda.

I also decided to not record myself this week because I’m waiting on my new microphone to come in the mail, then you’ll have to listen to me blab on and on. Enjoy the momentary silence.

It’s also important to note that the images for this week’s Mixcast come from my friend Ed Fladung. Honestly, I don’t remember how I met Ed, but I think it was through my blog and possibly over Twitter. Ed is a fantastic photographer who lives in Mexico, taking really great surf photos and talking about design and websites and all kinds of good stuff. Definitely take a peak at his portfolio and his blog as well.

Here’s this week’s tracklist:
You by Gold Panda
Tell Me Why by M.I.A.
Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains) by Arcade Fire
The Passenger by Stars
Silver Sands by Stereolab
Baseball Cards by Wavves
Lady Daydream by Twin Sister
And the World Laughs With You by Flying Lotus
Lovers by Brothertiger
Here Sometimes by Blonde Redhead
Ending of Me by Admiral Radley
Sun Arrow by Candy Claws
Free Translator by The Books

I know yesterday was the 4th of July but I really wanted to do an American themed mix to celebrate the occasion. I suppose this mix seems a bit half ass since honestly all I did was search for songs with the word “America” in them but it’s the way they’re mixed and the ordering that really makes this mix kinda’ cool. I guess you’ll be the judge of it but I happen to think this mix turned out pretty damn well.

Please take a listen and let me know what you think of the outcome.

Here’s this week’s tracklist:
American Hearts by A.A. Bondy
Surf Wax America by Weezer
Detouring America With Horns by Yo La Tengo
American Wife by Rilo Kiley
America’s Boy by Broadcast
America by M83
Born in the U.S.A. (with Concern) by Casiotone for the Painfully Alone
One More American Song by The Duke & The King
Ashes of American Flags by Wilco
Flightless Bird, American Mouth by Iron & Wine

Seeing as how it’s Monday I suppose I should be a good little blogger and give you a new Mixcast. This week’s mix is a lot of new music that I hope you haven’t heard yet. It all came together really well and quite quickly, and I think overall it’s one of my best to date. The songs are all rather upbeat and fun and I think they blend together really well, making the transitions pretty seamless.

I will say that my narration is bit… silly. It’s been a while since I’ve done one of these so I think I’m a bit rusty. Plus I need to buy a real microphone, which I’ll be doing ASAP, so that it doesn’t sound so tinny and crappy. I promise future versions will start to sound better.

And just as a side note, I had no idea that First of the Gang to Die was a Morrissey song… whoops.

Here’s this week’s tracklist:
Live In Dreams by WIld Nothing
I Died So I Could Haunt You by Stars
In Spain by Vadoinmessico
Yulia by Wolf Parade
I’m Not In Love by Crystal Castles
Three Trees by Tanlines
Do You Want It All? by Two Door Cinema Club
It Don’t Move Me by Peter Bjorn and John
Simple Severin by Superhumanoids
In The Times by Jeremy Jay
When I’m With You by Best Coast
First of the Gang to Die by Zee Avi
Loch Raven by Animal Collective

As promised last Friday I’ve got a brand new Mixcast this week with a theme that’s quite important to me. This week’s mix is a compilation of songs that remind me/were influenced by ex loves in my life. You know how you’re with someone for a while, and there are certain songs that stick with you and remind you of that person no matter how much time goes by? That’s what these songs are to me. They represent five people who’ve had the largest effect on my life in the past 10 years, some more than others. This is probably the most personal mix I could ever make, so I don’t know if it’s any good, but hell, I certainly enjoy it and I hope you do as well.

I also need to mention that this week’s Mixcast features the photos of Andrea Cheng, a wonderful photographer who I e-met long ago somehow but have enjoyed her photos for a long time now. The colors of the succulents totally drew me in and I knew I had to use them. Plus I’ve had quite a plant thing for the last few mixes, so I thought it was quite fitting.

Here’s this week’s tracklist:
We Rule The School by Belle & Sebastian
California Stars by Billy Bragg & Wilco
Chocolate by Snow Patrol
Be Still My Heart by The Postal Service
Cigarettes & Chocolate Milk by Rufus Wainwright
P.S. You Rock My World by Eels
Everythng Beautiful Is Far Away by Grandaddy
Something About Us by Daft Punk
Paper Tiger by Spoon
British Columbia by The Elected
On Peak Hill by Stars
New Country by The Walkmen
Norway by Beach House
Happy Eyez by CocoRosie
Happines is a Warm Gun by The Beatles

The Mixcasts are back and better than ever! This is a big collection of everything I’ve been listening to, just so you know what you’re getting into. I actually put this together when I was in New York, so that was where my head was at. I’d say it’s pretty upbeat for the most part and there should be some fun stuff you may have not heard before. I tried to get kind of a summer-y feeling to it. I’d say it’s a pretty good way to start the weekend. Maybe put it on if you go to the beach?

From here on out I’ll be back to releasing this on Mondays, so be ready for more tunes soon. If you’d like to let me know which songs you liked or any ideas for themes I’m always up to hearing from you. Thanks for waiting patiently for this little friend to come out.

Finally I have to give a huge thanks to my friend Kim Høltermand who allowed me to use beautiful photos for the covers of the Mixcast. This might be a new trend I start where I’ll use artists/designers/photographers to contribute to the covers of mixes. Just another way to share the work of talented folks out there!

This week’s Mixcast, I must admit, is probably one of my favorites I’ve made in a while. The theme this week is all about plants, as I was influenced by the idea of changes, fresh growth and new life. Kinda hippy, I know, but that’s where I’m at right now. All of the songs have plant names, though they might not really technically be about plants, that would be quite a feat to put together.

Overall I think the mix has a really great flow to it plus it clocks in at 1 hour and 7 seconds, so it’s one of the longest Mixcasts I’ve put together as well. But, I may have recorded my portion this morning, right after I woke up, sooooo yeah, I might sound a bit sleepy, haha… I promise to not do that ever again, y’know, unless you like my sleepy voice.

Also, if you like the cover the original photos were taken by Stephen Reynolds who has a ton of amazing wildflower photos, which you can check out here.

Here’s this week’s tracklist:
Rhodedendron by The Beta Band
Sumac Berries by MF DOOM
Bluebells by Patrick Wolf
Under The Pines by Bodies of Water
Heatherwood by Deerhunter
Fields of Flowers by Deathray
Dandelion by Charlotte Gainsbourg
Daisy by Stone Temple PilotsNorwegian Wood by The Beatles
Willow Tree by Chad VanGaalen
Dreaming in the Royale Oaks by Erick Messler
Cherry Tulips by Headlights
Four Leaf Clover by Badly Drawn Boy
Manzanita by Asura
Apple Orchard by Beach House
Poison Oak by Bright Eyes

I’ve got a really awesome Mixcast this week, I’m really excited to see what you think. I had previously mentioned on my Twitter that it would be about criminals, though I think officially it would based around degenerates, people who might not be quite so on the up and up. It’s definitely not a dark album, that’s kind of the funny thing. The beginning is definitely upbeat and peppy, though some of the lyrics might be a bit dark, but that’s kind of the point. This was a fun mix to put together, even if it was a bit of a challenge.

I’d also like to say that the Devendra Banhart track is on here because wizards are definitely degenerates, I mean look at Dumbledore or Gandalf, those dudes were totally seedy.

Here’s this week’s tracklist:
Killers by Casiotone for the Painfully Alone
The Mercy Seat by Johnny Cash
Black by Okkervil River
Of Minor Prophets And Their Prostitute Wives by Pedro The Lion
Criminals (Electronic) by Atlas Sound
An Animated Description of Mr. Maps by The Books
Pyschotic Girl by The Black Keys
Not If You Were The Last Junkie On Earth by The Dandy Warhols
Needle of Death by Bert Jansch
Horseheadedfleshwizard by Devendra Banhart
Grave Robbers by Mount Eerie
John Wayne Gacy Jr. by Sufjan Stevens
Arms of a Thief by Iron & Wine
