As I began to explore the facets of neon it started to occur to me that neon is rarely used for high-end purposes, save perhaps for the work of Bruce Nauman. This interesting project by Lorenzo Vitturi uses neon to highlight the differences between the old and what’s new.
This series of images is a site specific project that took place in a Venetian palace in Italy. The intention was to transform the historic environment of the palace into a metaphysical space playing with the contrast between classic and contemporary.
You have to admit that it’s pretty interesting to see a palace lit up with neon lights, especially when the lights frame the spaces in such interesting ways. I think the photo of the door below has to be my favorite of them all though. There’s something bizarre and ethereal about it, like you’re peering through into an alternate dimension perhaps. A truly beautiful series of works.
