Giving 110 animators freedom to do whatever they want in a single collaborative project could be a recipe for disaster. With Franchise, the latest release for animated type series Animography, the results are far from disastrous. Given the constraints of duration, dimensions, color, and and a single set of letterforms, the resulting animated typeface is a stunning combination of diverse styles and animation techniques.
Given the small window of 25 frames, each glyph manages to tell a little origin story. The letter I spends a brief moment as a bespectacled hot dog before settling into its typographic resting place. The backslash arises out of a series of trapdoors opening and closing. The punctuation marks actually have some of the largest and most experimental build sequences, as if compensating for their smaller destinations.
Franchise is one of many animated typefaces released for Animography, an ongoing project founded and curated by Dutch motion graphics studio Calango. It’s free, and includes the full After Effects source files, so you can go in and examine all the keyframe magic yourself. Check out Franchise and the rest of the Animography offerings here.
