Exquisite Corpse games produce surprising, bizarre, and often interesting results, especially under loose but clear constraints. Cartoon Network’s new summer ID spot takes the writing and drawing game into the fully animated realm, commissioning 6 different animators to create 10-second chunks which were then stitched together seamlessly to create a vibrant onslaught of hand-drawn animation.
Animators/studios Alex Grigg, Eamonn O’Neill, Impactist, leCRCR, Rubber House & Awesome Inc. (in order of appearance) were each given a color palette and freedom to go nuts with Cartoon Network’s cast of characters, with an emphasis on Adventure Time. The results are stunning. Each animator’s style is evident, but the constraints of color and the fact that each is using hand-drawn techniques brings the spot together just enough to make it only as coherent as it needs to be. This short-form, rapid-fire approach to animation hints at the current fascination with art-minded animated GIFs on the internet without directly referencing them, and perfectly contextualizes that attitude for TV. There are so many fun details in this spot that it will surely hold up to repeat viewings all summer.
