Prehistoric creatures, lobster claws, baseball caps, and mad prints—this is the world of Julien David. The French-born fashion designer lives and works in Tokyo, and it shows, as his most recent collections were strewn with the kinds of crazy prints and oversized motifs seen on the coolest kids in Harajuku. A winner of France’s coveted ANDAM fashion award, David is swiftly becoming a fashion press favorite, especially due to his spring 2013 “Spoiled Child” womenswear collection, which included see-through basketball tanks with the word “Dinosaur” written across them. Really, who doesn’t want to wear dinosaurs?
Though David makes his fair share of suits and stylish ready-to-wear, it’s the street wear influences that excite my eyes. Playful and exploding with color, he isn’t afraid to put women in youthful, mismatched prints that often come with corresponding sneakers. For men, David hits all the right neutral ensemble notes for fall, but I’m partial to his current spring collection that puts giant caps and combs on knitwear. At a time when people seem to take fashion so seriously, it’s nice to see a designer having fun and mixing it up. There’s just something about a Scribble Print Fishing Hat that seems perfect for spring. And back to the dinosaurs, there’s even a Julien David/Colette Dino sweater collaboration to nab.
