Over the last few nights I’ve been stealing my girlfriend’s iPad and reading Jörgits & the End of Winter. It’s an illustrated and animated novel for children written by Anders Sandell and created by Tank and Bear. I had never read an interactive novel before and the adventure of the Jörgits was a wonderful introduction to the format.
Beautifully illustrated and designed by Anders, the book is filled with fantastic illustrations and the story is rich in interactive elements, allowing you to learn more about the characters, the environments and the story. You can get a good introduction to the book by checking out the video above.
The Jörgit are a collection of space creature’s whose home planet of Jöerg has become too cold for them. Fortunately, they discover that Earth is rapidly heating up and so they plan a mission to the balmy Hawaiian Islands. Unfortunately their expedition suffers a mishap and they end up crashing into the sea outside of Helsinki in the middle of winter. It’s an enjoyable premise and one which is filled with a whole host of fun characters that many kids will love finding out about.
The story introduces children to environmental issues and teaches them about the effects that temperature and climate change can have on living things. Coming from the same tradition as Tove Jansson’s Moomin Trolls and the Pippi Longstocking books, the Jörgits is filled with heart and plenty of Scandinavian style.
The book features a really nice soundtrack and Anders Sandell and his team have done a terrific job at turning his story into a really wonderful experience. Best suited for kids aged 8+, adults should really enjoy this app too.
