Setting the Standard with Fort Standard

Simple and functional—this is the ethos of design studio Fort Standard. Founded in 2011 by Gregory Buntain and Ian Collings, the company specializes in everything from furniture design and home goods to innovative lighting and  jewelry pieces. They’re also responsible for store design including the new Steven Alan Home shop in NYC’s Tribeca neighborhood.

I first encountered Fort Standard’s work via their Standard Pendant, which I bought at a store in Brooklyn and wear religiously. It’s a deceivingly simple wooden disk with inlaid brass that seems to pair with every ensemble. I have since become a fan of the geometric stone trivets lined with leather as well as their beautifully made glass wooden vessels, which are perfect for holding various kitchen sundries like coffee beans. Aside from their wide range of home goods (have I mentioned bottle openers, magnets, and candlesticks?), Fort Standard cobbles furniture, too. And their spare stools, side tables, and linear floor lamps are equally as streamlined and arresting.
