Jónófón is a beautiful gramophone created by the Icelandic product designer Jón Helgi Hólmgeirsson. Designed as a graduate project at the Icelandic Academy of the Arts during the spring of last year, the project is an acoustic vinyl-record-player that uses a papercup and a paper horn to amplify the music on the record.
I think it is wonderful to see technology stripped down like this and its great to see it taken to its most basic level. For Jón, the Jónófón can be seen as technology returning to a more simple place. “You could say that Jónófón is some sort of a return to simplicity while the technology today has gotten so complicated that it’s not made for the average Joe to understand” he says on his site. Coming in a flat-pack, the gramophone gives the user an understanding of how the player works. It’s a really charming idea and it’s done really well.
The Jónófón is currently an ongoing project for Jón and he hopes that soon it will be available to buy. You can keep up-to-date on how it progresses by checking out Jón’s website or following the Jónófón on Twitter or Facebook. More details and images can be seen below.
