Sometimes models are used to ask questions, like the bizarre vacuum-model hybrids we saw yesterday, and other times models are tools used to solve questions or simply to relay information. The models above are of a school building in Bali built entirely of bamboo. Inside the school, which has nearly two dozen bamboo structures, even more things are made out of a bamboo: the chairs, desks, the stairs… it seems like most things are made of bamboo except for the food and computers.
The school is the Green School, and it happens to be the “greenest school on earth” as designated by the US Green Building council. The school’s founder, John Hardy, even presented at a TED conference about the school (and how Al Gore ruined his life.) In his presentation, John talks about how he ended up in Bali, how the schools ended up being made entirely of bamboo and even how they ended up using models to help local construction workers understand how to build what they call the heart of school. That heart is a stunning double-helix built to accomodate the administrative functions of the school. It took nearly seven kilometers of bamboo to build the heart, but only three months to complete it. John Hardy believes it is the most beautiful bamboo building in the world.
