The English photographer Greg Williams takes some amazing portraits of actors. I first discovered his work amongst the pages of men’s magazines like Esquire and GQ – you know the type of pieces – “articles” about the ‘Woman of Summer 2009’ (Megan Fox) and the ‘Sexiest Woman Alive’ (Kate Beckinsale). Despite the racy content of these shoots there was always something a little more about Williams’ work which made it stand out from the rest. Sure they were images of Megan Fox and Kate Beckinsale in their underwear, but Williams also had a real talent for natural lighting, interesting locations and an obvious connection between himself and his model.
Over the years he has worked up an impressive CV of film and editorial work. Beginning his career as a war photographer, he has since moved on to taking photographs for magazines, films and advertisements. A notable early adopter of digital video technology Williams has recently started to keep a blog which gives a fascinating insight into how he works. It’s a good read for the budding photographers out there. Above is a selection of some of his portrait work – their images filled with character and personality. They’re fun, lively and a little bit different from your usual restrained celebrity portraiture. Make sure to check out the rest of his work online here.
