There were a couple of rad trailers released yesterday, one of them being Django Unchained, Quentin Tarantino’s new film which stars Jamie Foxx and Christoph Waltz. Here’s the lowdown, if you’re unfamiliar.
Django Unchained is set in the Deep South, and follows Django (Foxx), a freed slave who treks across America with Dr. King Schultz (Waltz), a German dentist turned bounty hunter. Together, they try to retrieve Django’s wife Broomhilda (Kerry Washington) from the charming but sadistic Francophile plantation owner Calvin Candie (DiCaprio) and his band of ruthless slavers.
It’s funny, because I was watching Kill Bill 2 last night, at like 4 in the morning. Since we’re in New York my timing is still a bit off. But it was great to see Quentin Tarantino continue to expand his palette, making films about things like the cruelty of slavey in America’s past.
There are two things I love in this trailer. The first is Christoph Waltz’s character rocking a serious Robert Redford/Jeremiah Johnson look with all those heavy furs. If you’re not familiar with the film you should go find it, you’ll see what I mean. The second being the shot of the blood splattered cotton at the 1:54 mark. It reminds me of that part in Kill Bill, when The Bride is fighting O-Ren Ishii and the blood hits the snow. There’s kind of a poetic brutality to it. Overall I’m really excited to see the film.
