What if you did the same job for 30 years, but no one really appreciated you for it? Wouldn’t you get tired, and maybe even, want to try something else? That’s the premise of Wreck-It Ralph, a new animated feature from Disney (full disclosure, I’m a Disney employee). Here’s the overall gist of it.
Wreck-It Ralph longs to be as beloved as his game’s perfect Good Guy, Fix-It Felix. Problem is, nobody loves a Bad Guy. But they do love heroes… so when a modern, first-person shooter game arrives featuring tough-as-nails Sergeant Calhoun, Ralph sees it as his ticket to heroism and happiness.
It’s a simple premise set in a pretty fantastic setting, and I think overall it looks like it has a lot of potential. Like the fact that they used a Talking Heads song in the beginning, that was a pretty big shocker for me. And then you’ve got all of the cameos from video game characters from all kinds of games. In the trailer you can see Zangief, Bison, a Pac-Man ghost, Kano and Smoke from Mortal Kombat, Dr. Robotnik from Sonic the Hedgehog – all in one scene. There’s also a quick shot of big open room, where I can definitely see Paperboy.
The one thing that did bother me about the trailer was the character that Sarah Silverman does the voice for. She seems like a pretty dumb character at first blush, kind of obnoxious (but not in a funny way). Hopefully I’m wrong on that one. I also hope they don’t spin this into a Monsters Inc. story where the good guy ends up being the bad guy, that’d be too easy.
It’s also worth pointing out that Michael Doret did the logo for Wreck-It Ralph, and he has a great rundown of it’s process and creation on his blog. You can see above is an early version of it, which is pretty funny when you compare it to the finished logo. No offense to Michael, but the Ralph above looks more like he might need to wreck your bathroom, if you catch my drift.
