This is a four-unit apartment building in Switzerland designed by 2b architectes. What’s interesting about the so-called Villa Urbane is the contrast between the concrete exterior and reflective interior stairwell. The stairwell winds around a kind of building-scaled kaleidoscope. Large, sculptural letterforms bounce around walls and multiply, disguising the physical constraints of the space in an optical illusion that you may not expect based on the sober exterior. Between the concrete and the kaleidoscope, there turns out to be an apartment building with units furnished simply using a limited color palette. Google translate tells me that this project has a more urban attitude than what is typical for Lausanne. It’s a great project and has an even better surprise waiting inside.
