Re-Covered Books: The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum

Re-Covered Books: The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum

All the way back in 1900, a 44 year old L. Frank Baum released a book titled The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, which has now become one of the most well known.. movies. Most of us now know the Judy Garland film of nearly the same name, The Wizard of Oz, which isn’t quite so much like the original book. I think that’s what makes this a good contest, because you need to know about the real book, not the movie, in order to win. Easy enough though, you can read the full book by clicking here.

So here’s your objective. Make a contemporary version of a modern day classic. Don’t make a cover to the movie, make it a cover to the book. But make sure it feels fresh and new. I’d suggest looking at the work of Neil Kellerhouse, who is leaps and bounds ahead of everyone else when it comes to contemporary design. Make it fresh, make it new, and make it amazing.

This time around you’ve got a pretty sweet prize. This time around we’re giving away an Apple TV (which is American, not sure if it matters), so you really need to throw some blood, sweat and tears into this one. Sound like a plan? Here are the rules.

RULES

• Please save your images as JPGs no larger than 800px wide at 72 DPI/RGB mode, there’s no height restrictions (within reason). Feel free to play with the dimensions and have fun with what you make. Making a front and back cover with certainly help your chances, but is not required.

• Label your files “Firstname-Lastname-Wizard-of-Oz.jpg”

• Send all entries to contest@thefoxisblack.com with the subject “Re-Covered Books: Wizard of Oz“. Cut and paste what I wrote there, it’s super easy and it helps me keep track of your entry.

• All entries are due Saturday, February 11, 2012 by Midnight, PST.

If there are any other questions feel free to leave them in the comments. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with and be sure to tell your friends/classmates/pets to participate. Good luck and have fun!

  1. Marcio January 17, 2012 at 10:17 AM

    Is this worldwide?

  2. Bobby SolomonBobby Solomon January 17, 2012 at 11:42 AM

Yep, competition is for everyone, though I’m not sure if the Apple TV works everywhere.

  3. Jake January 17, 2012 at 6:36 PM

Hi! I have been thoroughly enjoying this series. One request: Can you go back to showing the runner-up designs, like you did with Lord of the Flies? Thanks!

  4. Bobby SolomonBobby Solomon January 17, 2012 at 8:27 PM

@Jake – I can certainly try. It takes a bit more time to do it, which can sometimes be a problem. I’ll give it my best though : )

  5. Annie January 18, 2012 at 2:51 AM

just fyi the Apple TV will work anywhere.

the only thing you will need to change is the power cable.

  6. @philipalanoneal January 18, 2012 at 11:10 PM

Its amazing how many of Neil Kellerhouse’s designs I’ve seen out in the wild and not realized they were his. He’s ridiculously talented.

  7. Chloe January 25, 2012 at 9:57 AM

Is there any type to be added to the covers?

  8. Bobby SolomonBobby Solomon January 25, 2012 at 10:25 AM

@Chloe – You can add as much or as little text as you like.

  9. Chloe January 26, 2012 at 4:59 AM

Sorry to be a pain, but if I create a back cover too, is this additional to the 800 pixel width? or would you like them as two separate attachments?

  10. Bobby SolomonBobby Solomon January 26, 2012 at 6:52 AM

@Chloe – Two separate images, please.

  11. Ryan Snelson January 26, 2012 at 11:19 AM

    +Austin Eidson, nice.

  12. Chris January 27, 2012 at 2:22 AM

Paul Bartlett’s “Equisite Corpse” entry is great. I would buy that book! Interested to know why he used a cat’s eyes instead of a lion’s though. Perhaps it says Alice more than Oz?

  13. Chris January 27, 2012 at 2:25 AM

    Thats Exquisite. Typing fail. Sorry

  14. Paul J. Bartlett January 28, 2012 at 3:59 PM

Chris, thanks for the kind words. The cat is kind of a “Kansas stand-in” for the lion in the same way that a rusty milk can and burlap tie connote the tin woodsman and scarecrow. The idea being that everyday stuff from Dorothy’s world becomes magical when seen through emerald goggles. Or maybe a cat is more cowardly. Whichever answer you like. :)

  15. Thanh January 29, 2012 at 11:09 PM

i was going to enter this competition until i saw paul’s entry. i’m sorry, that is hands down the winner right there.

  16. C.Swift January 30, 2012 at 5:33 AM

Phew, Paul Bartlett’s entry is amazing – one of those why didn’t I think of that simple but great approach moments. I would definitely buy it.

  17. Claudia January 31, 2012 at 6:36 AM

I’m planning to design the book with my partner. Can we write our name or you only allow to just write one name?

  18. Bobby SolomonBobby Solomon January 31, 2012 at 8:32 AM

@Claudia – You can definitely put both names, that’s not a problem.

  19. e.coli January 31, 2012 at 3:05 PM

Does anybody (maybe the designer himself) know which typeface Paul Bartlett used for the “Wonderful”, “Wizard” and “Oz” part?

    Regards

  20. Armando January 31, 2012 at 7:18 PM

    @E.coli
I think the font is Neutra by House Industries.

  21. e.coli February 1, 2012 at 3:55 AM

    @Armando

Thanks a lot for your help, but I don’t think it’s Neutra. The font Paul used for his cover is much more symmetric (the majuscule “E” for example).

  22. Chris February 1, 2012 at 4:32 AM

I like Armando Roque’s tin-man special edition. What’s next; a furry one for the lion, straw for the scarecrow and finally er.. human skin?

  23. Armando February 1, 2012 at 6:16 AM

    @Chris
I’m working on those ‘special editions’ too!! Thanks for your comment.

  24. Paul J. Bartlett February 1, 2012 at 5:40 PM

    @e.coli & Armando

    Main font is Brandon Grotesque.

  25. e.coli February 2, 2012 at 7:54 AM

Ah! Thought so, but wasn’t completely sure because of the edges. Thanks!

  26. Taylor Myers February 4, 2012 at 9:16 AM

    Amazing typography and design, Amelia!

  28. Jaclyn Threadgill February 7, 2012 at 1:18 AM

I love Joe Lillington and Amelia Adysaputra’s submissions!

  29. Scott Hutchins February 14, 2012 at 8:03 AM

Favorites are Hernandez, Eidson, Lillington, Wood, Ross, Ewing, Misheva, and Threadgill.

I don’t like Candido’s on principle because it uses an icon created for the 1939 film not found in the book. That’s kind of like the edition of the Iliad that had the Trojan Horse on the cover. Jayne’s is interesting for exactly the opposite reason.

  30. Glenn I February 14, 2012 at 10:35 AM

Jaclyn Threadgill’s is my favorite because of the emotion on Dorothy’s face. It makes me empathize and want to find out more.

  31. Jose Rada February 14, 2012 at 3:04 PM

I love Armando Roque´s tin man edition of TWW of Oz…. I feel the cold of the metal jacket protecting an incipient heart that grows and lights up as I read the story…. Great!!!

  32. Cyn Passanante February 14, 2012 at 10:34 PM

Francisco Hernandez for the win! Classic yet fresh, and very clever.

  33. Alicia Farmer February 15, 2012 at 8:03 AM

I agree with Glenn. In fact, I hope Jaclyn Threadgill goes ahead with a full graphic treatment of the book. It would be wonderful!

  34. WL March 10, 2012 at 1:47 PM

Wanted to share this on Facebook so badly, but FB would not put it through — perhaps due to the high volume of images/causing a submission time-out? Would really appreciate if you added a FB Share button. Great site!

  35. Jess March 11, 2012 at 5:07 PM

I am in love with this concept! I am a teacher and am inspired to use this idea in my classroom! What amazing designs there are here!
