The Scout is consistently doing some of the best videos out there right now, the video interviews he’s done are some of my favorites. So I was excited when last night I noticed they’d uploaded a new interview with sculptor Josh Vogel.
He founded BDDW over a decade ago with his partner Tyler Hays and has since left the company to start Blackcreek Mercantile & Trading Co. He now devotes his career to wood turning and sculpting. We went and visited his studio to document his story, not so much on the craft but on the parallels between the process and time. It’s nothing like our other series and explores more of a metaphysical connection he has with wood and creating a sculpture from it.
I love the twist this video took from the normal interview, that it gets a bit deeper and more meaningful. Plus the pieces that Josh makes are incredibly beautiful, it made me immediately want to quite my job and start making beautiful objects with my hands. Maybe one day? Anyhow, the production of the video is equally noteworthy, especially the scene where he’s burrowing out the log, which you can see in the second image above. I also love the titles by Friends of Type-er Dennis Payongayong, the handmade quality really plays well with the video.
Sit back and enjoy the video, I can’t wait for the next installment.
