About a month ago I had the pleasure of meeting Kyle Blue, whom some of you probably know as the creative director over at Dwell magazine. He was kind and generous, we spoke for about 20 minutes about the nerdiest of design stuff and then went on our ways. Then 4 days ago he announced over Twitter, “Moving to NYC! Next Friday, will be my last day at Dwell as CD. Excited to focus all of my attention on ETC.” So what is ETC?
ETC, or Everything Type Company, is the small design company that Kyle runs along with his partner in crime Geoff Halber. They’re based out of Brooklyn and have a portfolio of great work that’s really heavy on the typography side. I don’t think I have the right words to describe they work, but I’d say it looks like “a crazy, old German typography that’s built on a crazy looking grid that doesn’t look like it makes any sense but in all actuality it does and oh my god they’re amazing.” Just saying, if I tried to do something like what you see above, I’d probably fail miserably.
While I’m sad to see Kyle leave his position at Dwell, hands down one of my favorite magazines, I hope striking out on his own makes him and Geoff not only happy, but even more successful. Congrats and good luck guys!
