Marcus Gärde, a typographer, and Linnéa Bach Gärde, a designer, make up the design company BachGärde, based out of Stockholm. They recently undertook the major task redesigning a free newspaper called Nya Upplagan (in English meaning New Edition). The original design looked like any free paper you see in a newsstand, somehow they all seem to look like they’re still trapped in the 90’s, design-wise at least. They basically said “fuck it all” and started from scratch, drawing upon inspirations like German and Swedish asymmetrical typography from the 50’s.
The results are pretty astounding, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a newspaper quite like this. It’s bold, it’s vibrant, the layout is unique without being jarring. I love how the overprinted colors looks, especially the orange and teal in the Concretes spread in the second photo above. I’m so jealous of what they’ve done, I wish I would have thought of this.
