Long Island House by Thomas Phifer

While looking for images of this house on Fishers Island designed by Thomas Phifer, I came across another project of his, the Long Island House. It looks quite different than his work that I’m familiar with, eschewing tectonically expressive rectilinear forms for an expressive, undulating roofline. Although close to the water, I don’t think the project’s compelling roof is a reference to water. I know because the architect has described the roof as calligraphic: “it is a house with calligraphic flourish, writ lightly yet vibrantly in the sand.”

    Yeah, I’d stay there.
