Bobby and I are huge fans of Faile and their work. Yet, they have outdone themselves with their creating the Faile Puzzle Boxes, a set of new puzzle boxes that are an amazing next step for them.
Primarily, they are a fun take on the idea of a puzzle box. Faile take the idea of a three dimensional memory game, akin to the House Industries’ Alexander Girard Blocks that were released last year, and turn it into a more mature, fun, and fantastic exploration of the idea. There are six sets (I believe) of eighty-eight six sided blocks that can form anything from a reimagined American Flag to sexy women advertising Faile and phone sex (all of which are absolutely fantastic).
Secondly, they are a “commonplace,” handheld piece of art. Each puzzle block set is hand screen printed, making it obvious that these blocks were crafted with care one side at a time. Inspired by comic books, Americana, pulp, literature, geometry, and the essence of playfulness, the puzzle blocks set are absolutely beautiful to behold.
Thus, we reach our third point: the puzzle boxes are incredibly exclusive. At fifteen thousand apiece, very few people will be able to snatch up these fantastic, one-of-a-kind interactive art pieces to actually “play” the game for themselves. However, because Faile are so forward thinking and kind, they have produced a free iPhone app that–essentially–provides the same gameplay of the exclusive puzzle box without the tactile, negative-fifteen-thousand-dollars-from-your-bank-account feel.
Below are some photos of the boxes. Check them out and, should you have a spare fifteen thousand, please drop Faile a note and play a puzzle box for us!
