Kyle and I took a trip up To Big Bear Lake this weekend for our anniversary, and we decided to stay at this super kitschy, Swiss-inspired cabin called Inn Der Bach. It’s extremely quaint, lots of hearts and American flags and there are even two twin beds in the living room in addition to the queen bed in the bedroom. Nonetheless, we’re not here to be fancy, we’re here to have fun.
This morning we headed out for breakfast at this little place called Madlon’s, which I thought was supposed to be French but Yelp describes it as American (New). The building and decor were really funny, the outside painted with fake snow clinging to it while the inside was kind of Bavarian meets country kitsch. The menu had a lot of great options but the most exciting part were the 26 pancake/waffle combinations as well as an equal mount of crepe options.
We ended up ordering the crab benedict and we split some cheddar cheese and chive waffles with sun dried tomato pesto on top. They both ended up being delicious, and the waffles, though mostly savory, paired really well with fresh maple syrup on top. They made great coffee as well and their tea selection was pretty large as well.
After that we decided to go hiking on Cougar Crest Trail, which was not to far from the restaurant. It was extremely beautiful out, super clear, blue skies and lots of fresh air. I found all sorts of interesting textures and colors on our hike.
We were having an amazing time, getting lots of sun and exploring the trails. Unfortunately, 15 feet from the main trail, I felt my ankle twist inward, and I had sprained my right ankle. It was such a bizarre feeling, like the bone had popped out of the joint and then back in. Suffice to say, we had to head back to the cabin right away.
When we got back though, we realized that we still hadn’t gotten our keys from the manager, so we had to wait around a bit for them to show up. I got totally bored, so I noticed an old, run down truck adjacent to our cabin that was amazing looking. It looks like it was used to advertise the place long ago, but it certainly hadn’t been driven in a while.
Despite being slightly broken we’ve had some good fun so far, and we’re going to venture into town for some dinner later, so I’m sure that’ll be delicious as well. I’ll try and do a follow up post tomorrow if we can figure out something to do that doesn’t involve me walking.
