Hey, can I borrow about 2000 dollars so I can buy one of these sweet paintings? They are the work of artist Tram Bui who meticulously draws the scaffolding of construction sites and renders her drawings in flamboyant colors. I’m a big fan. She started out painting interiors more representationally, but then she moved into a tiny apartment:
When she got to Seattle in 1999 to attend graduate school in painting at the UW, she had a tiny apartment with no pictorial potential, so she set about making a cityscape, only to realize she was more interested in the construction site in the foreground than the city behind it.
I tend not to think of Seattle as a place where buildings tower over people (even though I know it has tall buildings) but maybe the colors and receding pattern of scaffolding exaggerate how small standing at these sites feels.
