Usually when I see an artist who has a similar style to that of another professional artist I get annoyed. Originality is everything when it comes to art. But I think there can be a special exception, which I would personally give to Sam Wolfe Connelly. His art reminds me a lot of James Jean and Mario Hugo, two of my favorite illustrators, who are absolutely brilliant in my mind. What’s interesting is that Sam is only 23. Imagine being 23 and having a style that’s similar to those guys!
I wanted to get that out of the way because even though his style is similar to these guys I think he deserves his own accolades. He uses graphite, watercolor, colored pencils, mixed with some digital painting. I’m also a fan of his subject matters which are pretty fantastic, falling somewhere between Harry Potter and baroque horror. I think we’ll be seeing more of this guy in the near future and I look forward to seeing how his style evolves.
