Mike Mills is a funny guy. One time I was walking through SIlver Lake and I saw a guy that looked like him, but I wasn’t 100% sure. So I turned around to get a second look, and sure enough, he was wearing a Thumbsucker t-shirt. It’s been 5 years and 5 days since Thumbsucker was released, a wonderful film starring Lou Taylor-Pucci as a young man with a thumb sucking problem trying to figure out who he is. With his new movie, Beginners, Mr. Mills explores a similar realm, charting the journey of people trying to find themselves.
The movie stars Ewan McGregor who plays Oliver, a man trying to deal with two stunning revelations from his 75 year-old father Hal (Christopher Plummer): that he is gay and gravely ill. Crazy enough the story is based on Mike Mills own father who came out at the age of 75 and sadly died five years later. Based upon the trailer above I can’t wait to see this. The characters seem very real and likable and the movie itself seems really positive and uplifting. For whatever reason the trailer reminds me of Eternal Sunshine.
The film comes out June 3, 2011 in the United States.
