Paul X. Johnson

I can’t help but wonder if British illustrator Paul X. Johnson is a fan of film noir. His illustrations are filled with opaque shadows, chiaroscuro effects, classy dames, suspicious gents and dismal landscapes that instantly evoke the classic American films of the late 1940s. This cinematic quality is extended by the feel that each composition could easily pass for a film still that has captured a moment replete with hidden subtexts and secrets. In this sense, Johnson is not merely an illustrator but a storyteller who weaves ambiguous and strange narratives into his work.

This is AMAZING!! Very film noir esque indeed. I think this is the first artist where I’m actually considering to buy a print to hang in my house once I own one. It would look very sophisticated I’m sure.
