Over the last few weeks I’ve read plenty of great Best of 2010 lists and each one has pointed out what have been people’s musical highlights of last year (you can check out Bobby’s here). For me, it was a great year for music and I’ve really enjoyed plenty of great records from bands and musicians both old and new. One band which I’ve absolutely loved is the London based group Allo Darlin’ who released their self-titled debut back in June. Unfortunately, I don’t think the group received the attention and recognition that the album deserved and so I’ve decided to feature them today in the hopes that some of you guys will like them and go on to spend some time with some really great songs.
The album opens with Dreaming, an almost perfect pop song that features a wonderful girl-boy duet between Darlin’s front woman Elizabeth Morris and guest vocals by The Pipettes creator Monster Bobby. It’s a twee affair no doubt, but Allo Darlin’ has little to do with cutesy charm and a lot more to do with great melodies and beautifully sweet vocals. It’s one of my favourite albums of last year and one which I highly recommend to folk who are fans of the likes of Camera Obscura, Jens Lekman and Belle & Sebastian.
