Welcome to The Fox Is Black

For the past couple months I’ve been working on changing Kitsune Noir into something new, something better. If you’ve read the blog for long you probably realize that I have a tendency to change the design when I get bored. Well, that’s not what this is. I decided to change the name of the blog to The Fox Is Black for a number of reasons.

First is that it’s about a million times easier for people to remember. I think about 4 people in the world knew how to pronounce Kitsune Noir. Second is that annoying French record label who puts out crappy mixtapes and threatens to sue me all the time. This now allows me to break free so people don’t confuse what I’m doing with those dudes. So now I’m free to start my own record label without people getting up in my grill. Third reason, I wanted a fresh start with some new ideas and a new design for the site.

Speaking of, how much better is this design than that last one? Man, that last look and feel sucked. I’m extremely happy with how the site looks now and I hope you agree. There’s a lot of elements from older versions of the site and a lot of new ideas as well. As a warning I want to say that there are still some bugs and odd things, so please bear with me as I’m cleaning the site up. If you see anything crazy and not obvious than please leave it in the comments, which are also back and cleaned up as well.

There’s a lot of exciting things coming up in the next couple weeks like a brand new Desktop Wallpaper Project which launches on Wednesday and some other goodies as well. Thank you all for your feedback and positivity and passion for this site, Alex, Danica and myself really appreciate it.

    Hey Bobby!
I wish you all the best with new blog. I’m you reader for about 1 or more year. I really like your blog!
To my mind the old name was more intresting (and by the way i know how to pronounce it:) but all this story with french label is not good. So you are right, that renamed it.
    New design is lovely.

    Sorry for my english:)

  9. Marqie November 15, 2010 at 1:51 AM

I won’t say that the old design is better as much as this one is different.

The old design had a very solid website feel to it while the new design resembles a kind of personal blog. It may just need time to grow on me.

    The name is lovely though.

  10. philipp November 15, 2010 at 2:01 AM

i love that little fox up there. you should now make a website-background project aswell! :)

  11. Scott November 15, 2010 at 2:19 AM

Congratulations, a change is always as good as holiday. I’ve been following your progress, made me happy to come to the site and see the change.

  16. Ian November 15, 2010 at 3:00 AM

Ooo, I like. I love the new fox logo, too. It feels more spacious than the last design. I liked the old name (and knew how to pronounce it), but if it gets that label off your back then I’m all for it. Nice work!

  17. tomhi November 15, 2010 at 3:08 AM

nice work bro, looking super swell and sweet.

  18. Dijon November 15, 2010 at 3:09 AM

Dude this is hot! Some nice ‘The fox is black wallpapers would be awesome! Cheers

  19. Tom November 15, 2010 at 3:35 AM

Hey nice work, just discovered kitsune noir, damn i mean the fox is black, and i love it. it’s awesome.
    nice work man.

p.s. i liked kitsune noir. japanese and french. it was such a frikken awesome name.

  20. Matt November 15, 2010 at 3:56 AM

Liking the new look, though it may take a while to get used. I’m liking the layout of posts and the black fox icon is a nice touch.

The renaming will also help my ipod, as i have those crappy kitsune mixtapes, and it’ll keep yours separate, which is nothing but a good thing!

One little thing I’ve noticed is the alignment of ‘eat, drink, design’ is off compared to ‘black.’ Other than that, the new logo is great!

  21. Nuno November 15, 2010 at 4:04 AM

Change is good. Keep up the good work!!

  22. Joe November 15, 2010 at 4:06 AM

    I like!

  23. Mitch November 15, 2010 at 4:26 AM

    rock n roll man
still liked the nav bar on the left, but alas…

  24. Danny November 15, 2010 at 4:41 AM

Great re-design, the little touches you’ve added are great (/wave little black fox icon), its definitely a change for the better.

  25. Amanda November 15, 2010 at 4:45 AM

Nice work! Love it, but sad as I liked the name Kitsune Noir… maybe because I knew you before I really knew Kitsune Maison…boo to them.

  26. john November 15, 2010 at 4:46 AM

I loved the old website, but liking the new design and if the content is going to be similar then I think your on to a winner!

  27. benda November 15, 2010 at 4:47 AM

Nice work! Not so sure about the rounded rects…particularly alongside your sharp new logotype. But other than that this is hot stuff. Love the blurry backgrounds.

  28. Desmond November 15, 2010 at 4:53 AM

Nice redesign. Looking forward to more entries soon.

  29. mark07 November 15, 2010 at 5:17 AM

nooo, i like the old name better. but i do understand if they kept bugging you before about the name and everything. well good luck with the new blog .. cool logo !! i was expecting a ‘follow’ button on the top right with the new website look tho .. lol

  30. Riaz November 15, 2010 at 5:20 AM

Great new look. What is the font you are using?

  31. John November 15, 2010 at 5:27 AM

Totally digging the new logo and name, but the site is not as clean. The dark background does draw focus away from certain colors in posts. Embrace the new logo but it is very hard to see against that dark corner in the main page background. Possibly put it within a white square

  32. Dawson November 15, 2010 at 5:42 AM

Nice work! Love the new look.

  33. John O'Malley November 15, 2010 at 6:00 AM

Long time follower, first time commenter. Love the changes…feels way more relaxed. Would enjoy a constantly changing background like LimitedHype. Always provides good inspiration.

  34. Thomas November 15, 2010 at 6:09 AM

Now, that’s what I call “Change we can believe in!”

  35. Patrick November 15, 2010 at 6:19 AM

Excellent redesign! Has a much more mellow and tranquil feel. Reading the site is almost soothing. :)

  36. johnny November 15, 2010 at 6:22 AM

Congrats Bobby! The more time I spend on the site the more I like the new design.

  37. LA November 15, 2010 at 6:48 AM

Loving it. Alot more fresh, up-to-date look. Seems to fit with more of what Kitsune Noir was about …

Obsessed with the Fox Icon, Made With Honor ALWAYS does great work.

Overall, it just feels good and right.

    Way to go Bobby.

  38. Kelsi November 15, 2010 at 6:49 AM

I think the logo looks great, but I do miss the set up of the old site. I feel a little like I’m looking at a tumblr blog now. But who knows! Maybe it just needs to sink in. I’ll keep visiting regardless :)

  39. kalifa November 15, 2010 at 7:01 AM

I visit your site regularly and I do have to say that I will miss kitsune noir. I really appreciated that name. Nonetheless, I’m sure The Fox is Black will be fantastic! Good luck!

  40. melissa November 15, 2010 at 7:02 AM

    this rocks.

  41. neil November 15, 2010 at 7:16 AM

Definitely a fan of the fox logo, but I think kitsune noir was a sharper name. Preferred the old design as well, this does have a bit of a tumblr feel.

  42. Morgan November 15, 2010 at 7:17 AM

The redesign looks wonderful! Very well done indeed. I can’t wait for new content.

  43. Bree November 15, 2010 at 7:21 AM

I’m always using wallpapers from the wallpaper project on the Macs on campus at my art college. And of course I always get lots of comments and questions where I find them, many of my friends are hooked. It’s going to be way easier to say “Oh, from the Fox is Black dot com!” instead of trying to say (then spell) Kitsune Noir when someone asks. Can’t wait to see what the new wallpaper project brings and what desktops and are going to require me sending more of my friends this way. :)
    Keep up the good work.

  44. Brian M November 15, 2010 at 7:26 AM

I also knew how to pronounce the last name… but I really didn’t like to try to say it. I think this is fantastic!

  45. Jonathan November 15, 2010 at 7:37 AM

New name is definitely better. i also like the new design much cleaner and fresh.

  46. Andy Howard November 15, 2010 at 7:51 AM

Man, change always polarises. I much preferred the old design & brand.

Sucks you had some naming issues but Kitsune Noir was a sick name. Sounded great when listing fave inspirations : “Juxtapoz, Urban/Decay, Kitsune Noir.. ” .. it worked nicely. But “Juxtapoz, Urban/Decay, The Fox is Black.. ” .. doesn’t seem to have the same edge. I know it’s “only a name”, but what does The Fox is Black mean? And while Kitsune Noir was unusual; are you *sure* it wasn’t memorable? Curious if you ever tested/researched it. Always stuck with me and people I talk to about your site. I think The Fox is Black will be far *less* memorable, as it’s generic.

I considered the old design to be top class and used it as a reference site numerous time. Made you seem bigger than just one guy and it felt like a publication. This iteration feels like a personal blog and slots in with the tumblr hobby crowd, rather than the publisher crowd I associated you with. Feels like just another blog with cool content, rather than a polished design publication with cool content. Not sure if that’s your intended direction..

Good luck man, and I’ll definitely still be reading.

  47. RvS November 15, 2010 at 7:59 AM

Great design, just have to get used to it. Nice work and keep it up guys =D

  48. Scott November 15, 2010 at 8:28 AM

Love it, especially the changing pic background (although I do wish it repeated more subtly)
Also, you might need to suggest people update there rss feeds because mine didn’t work.
Looking forward to a bright and happy future following this awesome blog!

  49. Michael November 15, 2010 at 8:29 AM

Hey! I read your about page, I know how to spell Kit Sune eh New Our!

  50. Lindsay November 15, 2010 at 8:42 AM

    Change is good.
    Really love the name change.

  51. Philip November 15, 2010 at 9:32 AM

Great work Bobby – looking sharp!

  52. rainer November 15, 2010 at 9:33 AM

cause times they are a changin’

  53. Lennart November 15, 2010 at 9:35 AM

I like change, but this change not so much. It has a Tumblr feel and as I dont like the generic feel of those blogs, yours kinda falls in there to be honest. Still love the content, and the logo is great. Also, rounded corners, drop shadow for depth? Really? What year are we in?

Shame you had to be harsh on Kitsune the label, as I always enjoyed your positive vibe all over the site, including the music (that I didnt always find that interesting, but love your passion for it). That little sentence just was uncalled for in my opinion, even if they we’re being bitchy about the name.

Good luck with the new design!

  54. Adski November 15, 2010 at 9:40 AM

I love it! Looks great but I loved the old name too.

  55. Em November 15, 2010 at 9:42 AM

Looks sleek and refined – high fives.

  56. Matt November 15, 2010 at 9:47 AM

If it were me I would; in the words of Scott Parker; drop the ‘the’.

    Fox is Black.

But it is of course your call. Really like the new look and feel.

  57. Lash November 15, 2010 at 10:56 AM

I’m torn. I like the fox logo, but I prefer Kitsune Noir over the English translation. However I do understand wanting to separate your brand from the French label.

The old site felt as if it had a little more structure and organization—even though this site basically has that same structure and organization. I think breaking the posts out into separate shapes, and having rotating backgrounds, is where that structure—for me—breaks down some.

On the old site, your content was at the forefront and the site design was more of a background element—which I think is important on this type of site since you have SUCH an array of stuff. By having floating content, and rotating backgrounds, it starts to take attention away from your content. Kind of an, Aol. logo floating over (whatever).

That all being said, this blog is such a great destination for stuff that we’re all interested in, you could have designed your site in MS Paint (which actually might be rad) and we’d still come. Nitpickiness aside, change can be good, and we’re all excited to see where you take TFIB next. Keep it up.

  58. Natalie November 15, 2010 at 11:47 AM

Awesome, such a fan of the new look. Always will be Kitsune Noir in my head, but TFIB works too. Well done!!

  59. Angelique November 15, 2010 at 12:22 PM

I am blown away. Need I say more?

  60. Jon November 15, 2010 at 12:52 PM

I’ve been a reader of the blog for about three years; it is undeniable that you have superb taste even if you come off like a dick sometimes. This redesign, however, is fucking incredible.

The name Kitsune Noir was starting to sound a little late-90’s and the blog was looking like, well, a blog. You now look like a legit website with an updated, non-kitschy name. Congrats.

  61. Dalen November 15, 2010 at 1:00 PM

Love the new name, but the background and box styles are a bit boring. Something like Altered Zones is executed far better…

  62. Thais November 15, 2010 at 2:43 PM

Congrats on the inspirational changes! Change is good, and longtime readers like me will follow you guys down no matter what you’re called :)
Cannot wait for the new Desktop Wallpaper Project, I recommend that to everyone I know!

  63. saer {craven maven} November 15, 2010 at 4:00 PM

I love that little fox! I must say, I am going to MISS saying ‘Kitsune Noir’ it was a great pairing.

  64. Karina S November 15, 2010 at 4:39 PM

As Gloria Gaynor (almost) once said “So now you’re” [black] “from outer space…”

An appropriate past comment I think, obviously the lyrics reference this change.

  65. José Luis November 15, 2010 at 5:29 PM

It’s kinda bittersweet feeling to it. First, I’m truely excited for you, Alex and Danica. Second, I miss so much the old name, but I understand the need to change it (also, I now how to pronounced it too). Third, I like how the backgrounds changes as entering to a post. And finally, good luck with everything.

  66. maria November 15, 2010 at 5:34 PM

I like the new look, but the Kitsune Noir name was the best!
I am sad you changed it. Nevertheless foxes are cool too.

  67. omdroparebop November 16, 2010 at 5:50 AM

    It works for me, Bobby.

  68. Mina November 16, 2010 at 6:00 AM

I really regret that you had to give the name away.
It was memorable and had a really nice ring to it – but I know, a new start always needs a clean cut (or so).

And the whole new design – I wasn’t the biggest freind of the old grey design as that is was so generic- the love for colour suits you much better, imho.

Just…it seems less professional now. A bit like a Tumblr?

Oh and I would definetly put the “menu” on the left side. The right side just irritates me, it feels wrong.

But, all in all – a great new reinvention of your own personal brand :)

  69. Stacey T. November 16, 2010 at 11:07 AM

It looks great! Love the new name and logo.

  70. Natasha November 16, 2010 at 6:36 PM

I actually really liked the name and design of Kitsune Noir. Either way, still a fan, will just have to get used to the new version :)

  71. Yuko November 16, 2010 at 6:58 PM

Kitsune Noir has been my favourite blog, and The Fox is Black will continue to be!

I should be the fifth person who knew immediately how to read the franco-japonais title :)

    Best wishes from autumn Tokyo.

  72. João November 17, 2010 at 6:59 AM

    Hi Bobby, it’s looking sweet!

Unfortunately, the rss feeds did not keep up with the transition… I stopped getting your posts, and I decided to check what was up, and boom I get the answer.

  73. Bonnie November 17, 2010 at 1:00 PM

Thumbs up from Bonnie in Holland !

  74. JC November 18, 2010 at 2:07 PM

everything needs a change now and then. Must say I liked the old name and even though I didn’t know the french label was threatening to sue I did think quite a few times I wonder if the label knows about this blog and what they think. I guess we know what they think now, poop!
Design as always looks great. awesome work. I just retooled my site as well and I totally know the feeling of needing a new lick of paint to freshen things.
    keep up the great work.

  75. kamah November 19, 2010 at 6:57 AM

Hi Bobby, first of all, i’m a faithful long time reader.

Although change is a good principle and despite the fact i love the typeface and the logo, i’m not fond of this design: to me the round edges are way too common/ 2.0 banality, the background change is a gadget, and takes precedence over the content.

But my main regret is the name: Kitsune Noir had more originality and identity. Moreover, If you changed your name because of kitsune, you ladmit your inferiority. Just like if you were two classmates with the same firstname, you’re the one who needs his surname.

I must admit, I’m french (pardon my english) but it’s not patriotism that makes me defend Kitsune: they aren’t as crappy as you said: if you take a look at their catalog, you’ll find pretty good artists and a lot of original remixes/collabs on their compilations. They make clothes wich are sold at Monocle as well as Collette (not so bad this side of the atlantic)…

Once more, I really appreciate this blog, but I hope you will keep on change it (soon).
