New Yorker Halloween Cover by Ivan Brunetti

I had Halloween dinner earlier tonight with my boyfriends aunt and uncle and I spotted the new issue of The New Yorker with this sweet Ivan Brunetti illustration gracing it’s cover. If you look at this cover long enough you realize that you’re looking at a huge party with it’s weary hosts standing in the bottom right corner. The guests are a huge mix of people, from a gaggle of Gagas at the top left, Popeye and Olive Oil in the top right, Shakespeare raiding the beers in the fridge, the Bride of Frankenstein, Wolfman and Dracula giving the stink-eye to Freddy Krueger and even Robert De Niros as The Godfather, Jake La Motta from Raging Bull, Travis Bickle and Rupert Pupkin from The King of Comedy all stare each other down. One of the best Halloween covers I’ve ever seen.

This is an outstanding cover, though I suppose one would expect no less from the New Yorker. One question, are those the hosts in the lower right or guests that forgot to dress up? It looks like one is holding a present (probably wine) and the other is carrying some sort of dish, with the entrance (welcome mat) behind them. The Statue of Liberty may be the host. Regardless, what a neat find!

@Fletcher – I think you may be right!

@Freddy – Robert De Niro’s characters name in ‘Taxi Driver’ is Travis Bickle.

I’ve been trying to decode all the different scenarios, as there seem to be a few interesting “confrontations” or conversations occurring:
    1) gaggle of gagas
    2) old elvis vs young elvis
    3) old monsters glare at jason voorhees (not freddy)
    4) old witch looks sadly at young witch
    5) poe looks sadly(?) at capote (while shakespeare grabs a soda; these three seem to be a set)
    6) batman vs superman arm wrestling(?) while robin, wonder woman, spider-man look on and hulk pigs out
    7) devil threatens to pop grapes with a pin
    8) groucho chases maid
    9) dog is not happy about hot dog costume
    10) cat chats mouse
    11) betty rubble chats robot
    12) cowgirl chats city boy
    13) popeye chats olive
    14) costumeless couple arrives, to statue of liberty’s disappointment
The tin man and a viking are also in attendance.

chaneski – Oh yeah. The old and young Elvis – I was thinking Elvis Presley vs Elvis Costello. I was wondering about the mohawk wearing man with the pistol. Is that Sid Vicious?
