Space Suit of the Week

It started as a search for balloon-related spacecraft, but ended with extra-vehicular activity conducted by teddy bears. It’s a little cutesy, seeing how the bears’ space suits were made by jolly, British school chaps (working with students from Cambridge University) but the project was designed to do more than resemble an Elementary School production of Muppets In Space.

Actually, the bears are collecting a bevy of data about the temperatures in space and how effectively varying materials insulate. The bears are also demonstrating applications and opportunities of the Sciences to young students. And a balloon helped; it was a humble weather balloon that pulled the bears 100,000 feet into the stratosphere. The balloon then popped and the bears returned safely to the ground thanks to parachutes.

So everyone’s happy… except for the balloon.
