Currently based in Beijing, British photographer Jasper James captures the mood of the spaces that he inhabits through his camera’s lens. His “People and Places” series creates an evocative synthesis between city and subjectivity and features a selection of images that superimpose his gazing subjects onto the panorama of Beijing’s urban sprawl. His photographs hint at the manner in which the city leaves a mark on the subject and vice versa, and it is this imprint of emotion that makes his photographs so special. For one thing, I have never seen Beijing look so contemplatively beautiful. Needless to say, I relish seeing the world from James’ photographic perspective.
