Following the release last week of the poster for Sofia Coppola’s upcoming flick Somewhere, I (along with many other Coppola fans) have been eagerly awaiting a few more glimpses of the film. If the trailer is anything to go by, it looks as though Coppola’s usual stellar soundtrack choices and delicately emotive visual style will prevail in Somewhere. Her signature narrative methodology of utilising melancholia as a poetic device to shed light on hidden moments of humour and beauty also appears to be at play.
For those who are not familiar with the film’s background, the synopsis that accompanies the trailer reveals that Somewhere “is an intimate story set in contemporary Los Angeles; Johnny Marco (Stephen Dorff) is a bad-boy actor stumbling through a life of excess at the Chateau Marmont Hotel in Hollywood. With an unexpected visit from his 11-year-old daughter (Elle Fanning), Johnny is forced to look at the questions we must all confront.”
According to IMDb, Somewhere will be released in the United States on 22 December 2010. I’m excited. Are you?
