God Only Knows by The Beach Boys

Last Friday I had a little contest asking you to tell me what the best love song ever written was. Surprisingly only one of you guessed it, a Mr. Ron Nurwisah from Toronto, who correctly guessed that the song was God Only Knows by The Beach Boys. In his own words:

“Easy… “God only knows” by the Beach Boys. It’s probably going to be the first song at my wedding.”

Easy indeed. This to me sums up everything that loves means all in 2:51. Never has there been a more impassioned plea sung in a song. The song was released in 1966 and I honestly can say, for me personally, nothing comes close to touching this song.

Congrats Ron, you’ve got a James Gulliver Hancock poster coming your way.

If you've got something to say, keep it positive.

  3. I could not stop singing this all weekend.

  4. Almost. There are about 7 Sam Cooke songs that are better, imo, but this I can agree with.

  5. Jamie Cullum sings a great cover of this over Geoff Gascoyne’s arrangement.

  9. John Short totally called it. Sam Cooke has written over 7 better love songs. Sam Cooke is the king of love.

  10. One of the best albums ever, but my favorite ‘love’ song on that record is Wouldn’t It Be Nice. One of my favorite songs ever actually.

  11. I don’t know, this song is indeed amazing (and how could it not, it’s The Beach Boys!), but for me ‘This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody)’ by Talking Heads will always be the model love song.

  12. Great song! but there are some other love songs that are more meaninful to me, like: Nicola di Bari – Rosa. I listen to it and I see my father singing it to my mother, and that love memory is bigger than anything else.

  13. I can’t say that the song I’m about to mention is the “best” love song, but it’s far and away the most meaningful/emotional love song to me.

    The Elected – Beautiful Rainbow

If you’re unfamiliar with The Elected, it’s Blake Sennett from Rilo Kiley, and a few different members doing his own thing. They have only released two albums, but they’re both fantastic. Everyone should give it at least one listen. They’re two of my all time favorite albums.

Please, please, please check this song out if you’re feeling all gushy with love right now.

  17. I hail from down under in Australia, so our “mainstream” music is slightly different to the US and Europe.

A New Zealand band called ‘Split Enz’ wrote a song in the 80s that I think is still the greatest dedication to love I have ever heard. It’s called “Message to my Girl”.

Neil Finn from Split Enz went on to form Crowded House, who had a small amount of fame in North America in the 90s, but this song is still the stand out from him!!

  18. seriously? not quite as impassioned as Don’t Ever Let Me Go, by the Kinks

  19. This was the first dance for my wife and I at our wedding. I think it’s perfect, especially with that jarring first line: “I may not always love you.” It’s not what you expect to hear out of a love song.
