Tokyo Sky Drive
February 4, 2010 - By Bobby Solomon - Category: VideoThe video above is called Tokyo Sky Drive and is utterly beautiful. I can’t really tell you how he did it, but I think he drove around Tokyo taking footage of the streets at night, mirrored it horizontally and then went from there. I say went from there because you’ll seem like you’re driving down a street and then you’ll enter some kind of tunnel or be under a strange overhang, and well, it just doesn’t process in my brain.
I’m pretty sure that some of these images are stitched together, but how I’m not sure, and I could definitely be wrong on this. But combined with the music by Sugar Plant it makes for quite a relaxing viewing.

If you've got something to say, keep it positive.It looks to me as if he attached a camera to the front end of a subway train. At least, that’s the only way I could see how he’d ever get so close to other trains. That may also explain why there isn’t any street-level glow or activity, even as reflections.
THe weirdest parts is when that rail car comes flying by out of no where. Mind-boggling!
Looks like it’s taken from the front of a train. Block off the lower portion of the video and you’ll see what I mean. Great find! Lovely.
I agree that it looks like a train ride. As for the “effect” I dont think there is anymore to it, than mirroring across the y-axis. Pause the video a couple of times and check on it.

At the end this doesn’t seem to be a tunnel. Looks more like the train is going over a bridge. The tracks on this bridge are under the street – so it looks like i tunnel! Great Vid!

looks great. Camera front of train (maybe raised track?), mirrored horizontally centre screen. Simple but fantastically effective.

Stop overthinking things. KISS. Its as simple as mounting the camera on a mirrored surface. It could very well be an oval bathroom mirror if you notice how the reflection curves where the images meet.

Essentially, “Please see this site on how I deal with the camera.” (Basically he has this setup where he fixes the camera upside down in his car, but in this case, on the Yurikamome line, he’s just holding it upright.)

This all reminds me of a great video put together by Michel Gondry for the Chemical Brothers. It’s a train ride through what looks like the French country-side punctuated by elements and changes in the landscape. Lots of repetition and layered patterns make for a mesmerizing journey!

He was in a train, there are spots on the video where you can see the track, probably by accident, but it’s definitely a train.
it’s a Yurikamome Line for sure. have been riding that line a couple of weeks ago and have the same footage. it’s all because there is no driver, so you can sit next to windscreen and film.
Has anyone figured out the title of the the song by Sugar Plant?
