I think that if more companies had their philosophies as in-touch as Apple, they'd not only be more successful, but they'd also produce better products. Regardless of whatever flack Apple is getting for the iPad, the ideas are all in the right places.

A lot of journalists are looking to this thing, wondering if it could be the thing that saves the newspaper industry. I don't really have a guess as to weather that's reasonable or not (though my gut says to remain skeptical), but if it is going to save newspapers, they're going to have to do a hell of a lot more than <a href="http://www.mediabistro.com/fishbowlny/newspapers/new_york_times_reveals_ipad_app_150195.asp" rel="nofollow">'port the print edition and add a few bells and whistles</a>.

I hope once news orgs start developing apps, they realize that different platforms have different sets of strengths and weaknesses. If they merely try to resurrect print journalism in an electronic format, they'll fail miserably. What works in print doesn't necessarily work online and doesn't necessarily work on the mobile Web.

These guidelines are a sign pointing in the right direction—I just hope enough news orgs see it.
