#musicmonday
February 1, 2010 - By Bobby Solomon - Category: #musicmonday
I don’t really feel like going over everything today, so let’s talk about the exciting stuff. First up is the Los Angeles band Local Natives, which honestly sound like something in between Ra Ra Riot and Fleet Foxes. If you like either or both of those bands I highly suggest you checking out these guys.
After that are two Japanese gentleman by the names of Takagi Masakatsu and Teruyuki Nobuchika. For some reason I’ve been on this minimalist, Japanese music kick lately and these guys definitely hit the mark. I’ve been listening to Masakatsu-sans pia and eating and Nobuchika-sans morceau.
What are you listening to lately?
Anything new or old that fit in with these folks?
Leave me some suggestions in the comments.
Bobby

If you've got something to say, keep it positive.I love your site. I wish I could click through your images to actually listen to the tracks. Can I and I just dont get it?

Die Antwoord – These guys do not fit the KN mold at all but I can not get enough of them, they’re too much fun. They’re the latest project from South African rapper Watkin Tudor Jones and aren’t supposed t be taking at face value obviously.

Whole album at their awesome website http://www.dieantwoord.com
you should check out Cavil at Rest, it was the original name of Local Natives and they had a more Minus The Bear-esque vibe. Lots more electric guitar, lots more energy, and just as good as their new album.
The xx , Empire of the Sun & Miike Snow – they’re absolutely addicting!
The End of the Ocean (chill ambient rock from Columbus, Ohio)
Fat Jon the Ample Soul Physician (down-tempo beats and samples from Cincinnati, Ohio)
“Symphonies (remix ft. Kid Cudi)” by Dan Black
My friend’s band River City Extension is fantastic, and they are getting ready to release a new album come spring time. You should absolutely check them out.

I just got really big into Local Natives early last week. I rediscovered the free NPR podcasts, and the first All Songs Considered I popped on covered them. The harmonies and song structures are impressive!
how about some pomegranates? i’ve been really into the song “jerusalem had a bad day”, although i’m kinda late on this :)
Totally agree with you about Local Natives! These dudes are going to blow up this year..
Also, that new Wu-Tang vs Beatles mash-up is pretty addicting if you get down on hip-hop at all?
I saw the Local Natives in Montreal last august and they were brilliant! Great show.
Have you heard the new Spoon record?
I’d also suggest Los Campesinos (a little more hyper), and Tune-Yards (a really original artist from Montreal). Yay!
Sparklehorse + Fennesz with their last album called In the fishtank, minimal music with a touch of electronic vibe on it, really cool
The new Laura Veirs album is awesome – true to form of course..
Also try this fun little widget – http://www.inudge.net/inudge#/m39x
SO addictive !
If you are looking for some more japanese minmalist here are a few.
Yashushi Yoshida (Fantastic)
Tsukimono
Gutevolk (Minimalist Japanese Pop)
Lullatone (Pajama Pop)
Not Japanese but minmalisty
Olafur Arnoalds
Anyways if you look around you will find plenty of good stuff http://shengwenhuang.wordpress.com/
Is it just me or does “Airplanes” by Local Natives sound an awful lot like a couple songs by The Temper Trap (specifically “Love Lost” and “Down River”)?
The latest U.S. Girls is good stuffs. Not the easiest thing in the world to find though.
hmmm… i’ve been hooked on Susumu Yokota’s work, as well as Masakastu.
It’s so easy to get drawn in. However, Shugo Tokumaru has some really nice indie-pop, guitar-driven sounds with these crazy progressions, i’ve recently gotten into his work as well. Also, Miho Hatori and The Pillows are pretty much go-to artists.
You would love The Middle East, Yndi Halda, Akron/Family, Snowden, Feu Therese and HRSTA just to name a few.
Patrick Watson.Amazing set of vocals and a phenomenal band. It’s like how amazing Robin Peckinfold is.

Try Chihei Hatakeyama… Good Japanese minimal musician/artist. Nice to space out to…

He does live stuff during KoC shows.
Just putting it out there. Love your blog!
Takagi Masakatsu is brilliant! Might I suggest Shuta Hasunuma, minimalist japanese glitch-pop. He’s wonderful.
I also endorse the hell out of Shugo Tokumaru. I’ve logged a thousand plays on my last.fm in the past year.
