‘A Single Man’
November 10, 2009 - By Bobby Solomon - Category: FilmsEarlier today Kottke posted the trailer to A Single Man, the new feature film from ex-Gucci creative director Tom Ford. The movie is based on the book of the same name, which was written by Christopher Isherwood in 1964, about a gay, British college professor working in Los Angeles. The movie has a great cast including Colin Firth, who won the Coppa Volpi for Best Actor at the Venice International Film Festival, Julianne Moore and Matthew Goode.
Visually, this is going to be an absolutely stunning movie. The production team from Mad Men worked on this and with Tom Ford’s incredible sense of style and design it’s going to be hard to take your eyes off of the screen. As for the performances, I’m not sure that you could have picked two more amazing actors. My favorite role of Colin Firth’s is in Love, Actually and he plays his part so well it makes me cry every time. As for Julianne Moore she’s absolutely one of the finest actresses of my lifetime. My favorite role of hers is in Magnolia, where she plays the wife of the ailing millionaire who is slowly and painfully coming to terms with his impending end.
Can I also say that Colin Firth’s glasses are absolutely amazing?

Funny you posted this–I’m going to a screening of A Single Man which is then followed by a Q&A with Tom Ford and Rajendra Roy. It’s a little less than two weeks from now at the Museum of Modern Art in Manhattan. I’d love to give you my review.
I haven’t heard about this movie until now but it looks to be pretty amazing.
I’m so looking forward to seeing this!
And oh, Colin’s glasses are from Tom Ford’s eyewear collection and yes they are amazing :)
That looks stunning. Hadn’t heard about it yet, but now I totally want to see it.
Abby Urban, what day will that be? I don’t see it on their calendar.

Jude,
November 23–It’s not on the calendar. It’s a part of MoMA’s film+ program. Invitations were sent earlier this month.
Stefanie,
I haven’t seen those glasses in his collection, you know anything else about them? Also, all of Tom Ford’s glasses have his logo (in some way) on them, and these seem logo-less. You sure they’re he’s?
Can’t wait to see Ford’s directorial debut!

Great stuff! I’m especially drawn to the color qualities here.
While it says the video has been removed, there’s still a trailer up at IMDB:
