Review: Monsters of Folk at the Greek Theatre

Earlier tonight I went to see Monsters of Folk at the Greek Theatre, a band made up of Conor Oberst and Mike Mogis from Bright Eyes, Jim James from My Morning Jacket and M. Ward, one of my all time favorites. From what I had heard about the show, I knew I was in for a treat. The show was 2.5 hours long, and featured not only songs from the new Monsters of Folk album, but also songs from their respective careers. Consider me sold.

I got there a little late, sadly, but walked in hearing M. Ward playing 100 Millions Years off of his new album, Hold Time. After that the next two or so hours was a blur of amazing songs and incredible performances. From Bright Eyes I got to hear Lime Tree, The Big Picture, At The Bottom of Everything, Another Travelin’ Song, and a duette with M. Ward on Smoke Without Fire. I was pretty excited to hear these older songs, something I honestly never thought would happen. Jim James played the My Morning Jacket song Golden, which I’ve posted above, though it’s from their performance in Portland. I’d also like to mention Mike Mogis who totally made these guys sound great. He’s a master of the slide guitar and the mandolin and he definitely deserves a ton of credit.

Overall it was a spectacular show, and if you appreciate any of these artists alone or together as Monsters of Folkf the I highly suggest getting tickets right away. Also a big thanks to Justin over at Aquarium Drunkard for helping me out with some tickets, thanks buddy!
