Scenes from Antarctica on The Big Picture

November 10, 2008 - By Bobby Solomon - Category: Blogs & Photography

I’m totally loving this new set from The Big Picture, featuring lots of great photos from Antarctica. It seem like such a surreal place that just happens to be filled with the cutest land birds ever. The photo above was taken at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station and in the foreground you can see sastrugi, which are ridges of snow formed by wind erosion. It’s almost like the film noir version of The Empire Strikes Back!

  2. I dunno why I thought of this but I remembered reading some report about how thousands of condoms were sent to Antartica for all the men and female staff working at the US Station there as winter was setting in.

    Apart from that, great pictures.
