Boy with a Coin by Iron & Wine
I’m yet again having problems with my tracks getting recorded… I swear I can’t win, haha.
Anyway, last week I did listen to a lot of Iron & Wine, which is something that’s been growing on my for a while now. I was a big fan of Our Endless Numbered Days, but when the new album came out I really wasn’t a big fan at all. But that completely went away and I now love this new album and his older work seems to pale in comparison. The Shepherd’s Dog is amazingly rich and detailed and shows just what a musical genius Sam Beam is. I think his beard might have magical properties as well, but don’t quote me on that.
After that was a lot of Gorillaz, listening to their ‘D-Sides’ as they’re now being called. Radiohead came next, and then Jon Brion and the Punch Drunk Love soundtrack. The Jon Brion comes in because I was listening to the Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind soundtrack as well, so he got some extra loving.
The only other band on the list that was a stand out for me was Cut Copy, who’s So Cosmic mix I’ve been listening to non-stop. It’s so damn good.

P.S. I also meant to mention that the best song on Iron & Wine’s new album is Boy with a Coin, which I’ve posted above. If those amazing background hand claps don’t make your day better, I don’t know what will.

The ‘So Cosmic’ mixtape is simply amazing. Thanks for the tip! I have been enjoying it on my way to work this morning.
I’ve been listening to Jon Brion a lot too, specifically the I Heart Huckabees soundtrack. I’m always surprised how often I hear bits of that score recycled in TV shows– I’ll be watching “My Super Sweet 16″ and all of a sudden the Caterine Vauban theme music starts playing while sum dum ho tries to outdo her predecessors with the inane heights of selfish excess. It’s somehow apropos…
Jon Brion is really great. I’ve had a chance to see him play at the Largo. He is a completely different thing live. Definitely something worth checking out.
