Vampire Weekend / M79

I’ve been listening to Vampire Weekend for about the past weekend now, and I can definitely say that this is the best album of ’08… so far. Vampire Weekend is made of four guys who met while going to school at Columbia University. Now they live in New York and make music that’s hard to pinpoint. I would say overall they write pop songs, but their influences range from dancehall to classical, with hints of Phil Collins or Peter Gabriel mixed in. It sounds totally random, but they blend all of these different styles so masterfully that it sounds great.

They’re new self-titled album came out last Tuesday on XL Recordings, so be sure to pick it up! And if you’re in the Los Angeles area, be sure to stop by Amoeba tomorrow night at 6:30 to see the band play for free! Last but not least, check under the cut for their new video, A-Punk. It’s done in a kind of fast motion/stop motion way and it’s really fun… and the lead singer’s pretty nice to look at.
