Secret Headquarters in Silverlake is having an awesome looking art show tomorrow night featuring the awesome artwork of Ryan Heshka. All of the pieces in the show look like they were inspired by old, pulp and science fiction comics from the 50’s, with all sorts of weird yetis and aliens and ghosts.
The show is from 8 to 10pm and there will be drinks, as always.
Mimobots has released a new artists series of their cute USB drives, their first collaboration with the amazing Friends With You! In the past I’ve never really been sold on the Mimobots. Sure they’re cute, but personally I don’t need to carry around a tiny action figure friend to keep my files on, that’s what iPods are for.
But I’ve been in love with Friends With You forever it feels like, so I’d be much more inclined to buy one. As of now, they only have two models out, which aren’t the ones I’d want. The ones I want are the Malfies you see above, which don’t come out until March. Sad times.
Driving around LA a few days ago I saw the awesome new advertisements for The Spiderwick Chronicles, a movie I don’t really care to see. But the ad above certainly caught my eye with the gruesome and fascinating specimens floating in strange liquids. It was also cool that I could go on their website and download the image as a wallpaper background. Someone in their marketing department realized that kids are quite computer savvy and would really enjoy having something so gross to look at everyday.
The movie comes out on February 14th, so you can take your Valentine sweetheart to see it!
As of lately I’ve been slightly annoyed with Facebook. I’m getting more and more annoying requests for dumb things like “hot men” and “cupcakes”, but then I came across the work of Jon Mutch, a random reader of the blog whom I friended a while ago. Jon graduated from the University of Winnipeg last year with a degree in art history and plans on going into graphic design.
The posters above were created for a friend who hosts a weekly event called Rock Paper Scissors. I know that if I saw one of these posters up I would totally take a second look. Jon was inspired by the work of Scott Hansen, but he’s definitely taken his own take on the retro style. And if you’re ever in Winnipeg, be sure to check out The Pyramid Cabaret!
Two years ago Nike SB released the Tiffany Dunk SB, the creation of Nickavelli over at Diamond Supply Co. The shoe featured the signature Tiffany blue, and crocodile skin, making it one of the hottest shoes of that year.
Now Nike is releasing a variation on the original and calling ti a “tribute”. Thankfully it’s pretty sick, coming in all black leather, a black corc skin swoosh, and a white sole with a black tip. On the inside is a wood grain patter which looks teal, but I think it would have been better to use the Tiffany blue again. Either way it’s a pretty damn slick shoe. This is totally my style, sharp looking, but low key.
This puppy should be out sometime in February, so keep an eye out.
Some of you may have noticed that there are some new changes on Kitsune Noir, and some of you may not. I’m really trying to streamline the site, and I don’t really do it in major, shocking ways, just a little nip and tuck here and there.
For example, there’s the new row of tabs under the banner, with links about and how to contact me, the RSS feed, and the search box now hangs out up there. To the right under my big, rotating head, is a field to join the mailing list. I really want to encourage everyone to join the mailing list because it’ll give you a heads up on a HUGE project that’s going to be starting on March 4th. Let’s just say that it could possibly even be beneficial to join…
I also want to take the time to thank my old friend Adam who helped me out with a lot of the stuff you see here. I’ve done a pretty good job of making things the way they are, but without his help this blog basically wouldn’t exist. Thanks again Adam!
If you see anything janky going on with the site as well, please let me know. The site is optimized for Firefox (which Google Analytics tells me that almost 60% of you use) and Safari looks good as well, but Internet Explorer may not look so hot.
Check out this awesome intro to the new-ish Lakai video, Fully Flared. The video was directed by Spike Jonze, Ty Evans and Cory Weincheque, took over four years to make, and contains over 30 skaters including Eric Koston, Marc Johnson, Mike Carroll, and Guy Mariano.
The song on the video is M83’s “Lower Your Eyelids to Die With the Sun”, and I’ve never seen it used better. The slow motion an explosions work so well with the haunting song. The rest of the video has some pretty rad artists as well, including The Arcade Fire, The Flaming Lips, Fischerspooner, and UNKLE. If you want to see more of the video you can watch clips of it over on Lakai’s Movie Section.
Earlier today China officially announced the opening of the National Aquatics Centre, the giant, $143 million dollar center that will host the swimming, diving, and synchronized swimming competitions in the upcoming Olympic ceremony. The structure was designed by Australian architects PTW, and is made steel and over 100,000 ETFE pillows, which are only eight one-thousandths thick.
I think the soap bubble structure looks really great, but like article states, the bubbles need some scrubbing to get all of the construction grit and grime off it before it’ll shine. It will also be lit by night by a system of LED lights that can turn the whole thing any of 16.7 million colors. I just hope that they get the rest of the grounds in shape before August, because in the pictures above, it looks kind of gray and scary. Hopefully the next few months will give them all the time they need.
Nooka is releasing a new series of camo pattern watches entitled “Creatures of the Night“, which features everyone’s favorite urban critters. Making appearances are pigeons, rats, mice, bats, and cats, all splashed together into one crazy pattern. My favorite colorway is the multicolored one on the left, and the one in the middle is cool too, but I’m definitely not hot on the right one. It looks like a little kids watch.
The watch should be out sometime this month, and go for around $250.
Sometimes when I hear a song, it really sticks with me, and I feel like I should start sharing these songs more, sort of like I did with Superstar by Sonic Youth from the Juno Soundtrack. This is, sort of, the first extension of that.
The song above, San Bernadino, stood out to me mostly because I’m a sucker for strings. The fast plucking guitar mixed in with the strings and his soft voice make the song almost hypnotic. This is one of those songs that are really good to drive to, especially if it’s in the morning, and it’s cold out. Go ahead and download it and try it for yourself, I promise you won’t be disappointed.
