The Savages

I was talking to my friend David earlier who saw The Savages the other night and was telling me about it. I hadn’t heard much of anything about it, so I checked out the website and was pleasantly surprised to see some beautiful Chris Ware artwork.

I’ve heard the movie itself was kind of intense, but I started listening to the soundtrack, which plays on the site, and it’s great. It was composed by Stephen Trask, and sadly, it hasn’t been released anywhere as of now. I know, I checked everywhere I could think of. And this bums me out, because I was hoping to listen to it while I fly across the country tonight.

So the point of this is, go check out the art on the site, and then listen to the soundtrack to make the time pass today.

It’s a good movie, but the soundtrack felt, to me, like a total rip-off of David Kitay’s excellent “Ghost World” score.

Actually, I found this website because I was running around online trying to find out if David Kitay was the one who did the soundtrack, because I was up watching it and I swear it’s really similar. I’m in the middle of watching it, so I didn’t want to fast-forward to the credits, so I got online.

I’d agree, kind of a total rip-off of Ghost world. Which I’d like to have sheet music for, incidentally…

I second that . . . I too came across this website because I couldn’t believe that Kitay and Trask weren’t somehow related. I just watched The Savages for the 2nd time on DVD. I own the Ghost World soundtrack — an excellent one – not just for Kitay’s Theme from Ghost Wold, but the great jazz and Bollywood track.

It was the music at the end of The Savages that particularly struck me, as not just similar but almost an exact rip-off. When I get a chance, I’m going to listen to them both side-by-side.
