The illycafe, Illy’s Portable, Fold Out Café

October 9, 2007 - By Bobby Solomon - Category: Architecture & Design & Food & Drinks

Check out this amazing amazing café by designer Adam Kalkin for Illy! The café was made from an old shipping container, Kalkin’s favorite thing to build with, and pretty magically folds out into a beautiful environment in about 90 seconds.

All of the materials used were recycled or recyclable, and the space contains a kitchen, dining room, bathroom, bedroom, living room, and a library. All in one tiny shipping container. Such an amazing idea.
They’re going to be around the Time Warner Center in New York from the end of November till the end of the year.

  4. I love the idea! My main questions are: If it is a cafe, then why have a bed and library instead of tables for people? and Why does the bed look like it is made of plasic–that would be totally uncomfortable?!
